Call for early elections causes stir

President Evo Morales left the country's politicians reeling when he casually told local authorities in Santa Cruz to do a good job because "there will be new elections to choose a new president within the year". The president's comment, which he made during a speech on 16 March, has provoked speculation in the national press that an early election is the first phase in Morales's plan to stay in power for the next decade.
